I thought I should be somewhat productive with my time instead of creeping on people's facebook profiles. I don't really have anything to talk about-- I mean, I do, but I think I'm going to do a couple full- out legit posts at work tomorrow. So, there it is. Three weeks left in my first semester at college, and I think I'm finally hitting my stride. I'm managing my time really well, getting all my homework done early, I'm hanging out with a great group of friends who like hockey almost as much as me, I met a girl I really like (not in the way you just throw it around in High School, and we're not talking about just sex eather. I mean I just love spending time with her.) AND last but not least, I got named starting goalie for my club floor hockey team. That's really not a big deal, but I can't wait to play in a competive situation again.

What Motivates Me As A Runner?

I run for a lot, some selfish some not. Stick with me, cause here's the rundown:

1) I run because I can. Long story, and I won’t go into detail. I had a stroke and further complications. The doctors told me afterwards I had a 6% chance of living—that’s not a lot. So, why not run? I mean, when I think back on the life I had, God was that close to pulling the plug on me, yet he didn’t. There’s a reason for everything, and I might as well run. I mean, I just feel blessed to be able to.
2) I run to show up my family. My brother was the 6th best runner in the state of Minnesota (not sure what he’s ranked now), my other brother runs XC also, and my dad’s a marathoner. It would be great to run faster and farther than them. Just sayin’…
3) I run because that’s all I can do. I played five sports in High School: hockey, soccer, baseball, swimming and track. Guess what, I’m not very good at any of them. I’m too small to play hockey, I’m at a standstill with swimming competitively, and I’ve found from the short stint I had with the college track team that I definitely won’t out sprint you. Maybe I’ll figure out how to out- pace and out- distance people.
3a) I run because its inexpensive. I’m in college, and I’m broke. I can’t play hockey even if I was good at it because equipment costs too much. Throw on some shorts, a running shirt, pop in the iPod, and there you go. I mean, I’ll shell out some money for shoes every couple months, but its worth it.
4) I run as an escape. It really is a stress reducer, and that runner’s high is real. Big paper due next class? Don’t worry about it, go for a run. Seriously, the number of miles you run is directly related to the grade you get on that paper. Book it, that’s going to be my graduate dissertation.
5) It looks good for the ladies. Well, I already look good, but…

I realized I just answered why I run subconsciously. Now I’m going to answer the real question.

Music motivates me. Like I said already, I played hockey, I was a goalie, so I’m a fan of really loud music. I love like some Blindside or Rev Theory to get the adrenaline going before a run and to help you out during the rough patches. I mean, your ears are still ringing by the time you fall asleep, but you really can’t beat that feeling.

First, let me apologize for not posting for a while, but I guess, who cares? no one reads this anyways. Now, to the business at hand.

I went to the Atmosphere concert with a couple buddies last night. They played with Abstract Rude, DJ Rare Groove and Blueprint. Doors didn't open until 8:00, and Atmosphere didn't come on until near 11:00, but it was all good, the cover bands were alright I guess, but Blueprint was the best by far. It sucked though because I barely had any voice left by the time Atmosphere went on. It was an amazing show, well worth the $20, I had a great time, met some great people-- I can't say enough good things, it was amazing. The only downside was I got to my dorm at 2:30am, and had work at 8:00. But like Slug said, fuck class, fuck work.

State Of The State (Of Hockey)- 11/12/08

While I’m in the writing mood (I’ve already written two papers today and still have one left), I figured I might as well write a piece on the Wild so you know I’m just lazy and not dead or something.

My original intention was to do weekly recaps of the Wild games, much like Mr. Alan Bass does, or at least did once. That didn’t happen though as I realized all college was is an endless cycle of waking up, going to class, and writing papers on the weekends and partying, sleeping, and waking up with a hangover on the weekends.

Now, to get back to the subject at hand. The Wild looked like world-beaters for the first three games of the season, but it wasn’t to be. The Gaborik- Koivu- Miettinen line was an embarrassment it was so good, until Gaborik got injured… again.

From a purely speculative standpoint, I thought management was holding Gaborik out in order to trade him, but my theory went by the wayside when the Wild put him on IR. It later came out, although not confirmed by the team, that he got injured playing soccer before the game.

With Gaborik out, it was time for the youth movement to take charge. Pouliot, Clutterbuck, and Reitz have been incredibly solid. Despite Pouliot being called up to take Gaborik’s spot, I think he’s earned a spot on the big club.

Write it down: November 12th at 5:46pm, Pouliot will be a permanent fixture on this Wild roster by the end of the year. Heck, I was right about Mikko being the next big thing. But then, even your mother knew that.

The Wild also got defenseman Marek Zidlicky back October 23rd, which is good for two reasons: (1) He’s got a cannon from the top of the circles, which really opens up a lot on powerplay, and (2) that means Skoula gets less minutes, which is always a good thing.

Of course, Owen Nolan is out again, but no surprise there. It’s his back again, which is bound to happen with a 36- year- old built in the Eric Lindros model as a power forward. When he’s in the lineup (which can’t be expected all that often), he has an uncanny nose for the net. In the five games he’s played, Nolan has a goal and three assists, including the game-winning goal against Columbus.
Overall, the Wild have had a solid start of the season, not great, but solid. For this being a "rebuilding year”, the Wild have done pretty well for themselves, Sitting tied for 3rd in the division and sitting tied for 5th in the division with 17 points.
Obviously, ugly losses to the Stars and division foe Canucks look terrible in the standings, but it’s early. If we get Gaborik healthy and producing, we’ll surprise everyone.

Before I start what seems like my 600th paper in the last two days, I want to start a rumor. If you were paying attention, you would know that I think Pouliot’s going to stay with the club. Then who gets sent down when/ if Gabby ever gets healthy? My pick is one Stephane Veil-useless (Stephane Veilleux). Just two points in 13 games, I think he’s long overstayed his welcome.

Halloween, the Election, and Other Important Stuff

So, I figure I'd post because I haven't in a while, and I'm sure my loyal fans are getting ansy. So, we'll run down the important topics in terms of importance.

1. Halloween
Halloween was pretty solid. I stayed sober. It was still a very solid night though. Me and this kid from my dorm floor, who was already halfway drunk, and we went to some girl's room and watched the Gopher game. It was a good time, we went to this club after (I forget the name). It was a blast, but I had never gone to a club before, so I probably looked like a total pedophile, its cool though. We were going to go to a house party after that because it was relatively early, like 12:30, but we decided not to because half the guys with us couldn't even walk straight, and we didn't really want to get them in trouble. So, I brought everybody up to my room because I wasn't about to let them walk across campus and get caught by public safety. Luckily, my roommate was in Madison, be cause I had like 10 drunk kids passed out in my room. Me and some sober girls (I was the only sober guy) just chilled and watched Slapshot until like 2:30 when we called it a night.
Here comes the hood part though. The drunk kids gave me like $10 each in the morning for babysitting them. So, I got to go to the Minnesota College Hockey Showcase and the Girl Talk concert.
2. Election
This year was my first year I got to vote, but I didn't do it early or often, or leave any hanging chads. It was a pretty good experience, made me feel all patriotic and such. I brain farted and registered in St. Paul, where I go to college, instead of Edina, where I live. No biggie though, the Senate and Presidential races were what I concentrated my attention on. By the way, the Minnesota Senate race, between Coleman and Franken, is separated by 300 votes. They're going to a recount.
3. Wild 3rd period woes
The 3rd period always seems to screw us. Take the San Jose game, tied 1-1 going into the 3rd, playing fairly well, and we lose 3-1. I'm starting a petition to the NHL to remove the 3rd period

How To Lose A Game In 5 Minutes

Oh, boy. Where do you start? the beginning would probably be a good place.

The Wild got outplayed by far in the first period, and Backstrom was under siege the whole time. Most notably, he made a great save on Max Afinogenov on a rebound out in front and Backstrom made a great glove save.

Former North Dakota Fighting Sioux player Drew Stafford. He made a great move to the backhand to slip it past Backstrom. Backstrom had almost no chance on the move and he had no defensive help. Great goal.

The Second, and most of the third belonged to Minnesota. This time it was Miller under siege, as the majority of the second was played in the Sabers end.

The Wild Scoring was opened by Benoit Puliot, his second on the year. More important than that, Burns made a great play in the Wild defensive zone to prevent a chance that got the puck off Vanek's stick and onto Puliot's

Most impressive however, was that Boogard got the first assist on Puliot's goal (yes that Boogard)

After a Veilleux off a deflection, the Wild were up 2-1.

I nominate Burns's goal for the wierdest of the year. Brent Burns dumped the puck in, and Miller went out to play the puck. Somehow, Burns got his stick on the clearing pass, deflecting the Miller pass in his own net to put the Wild up 3-1.

The Wheels fell off fast for the Wild. Instead tof the Wild tightening up like Jaques intended when he called the timeout, the Wild sat back too far.

A deflection by Paetsch, and a goal by former Minnesota Gopher Vanek tied it up.

In OT, Derek Roy somehow tucked the puck behind Backstrom amist a scrum in the crease.

State Of The State: The Latest On Gabby, Zidlicky, Nolan, And Bouchard

I know it comes as a shock to most hockey fans, but Marian Gaborik is injured again. Now, this is old news as he was injured a while ago during the road trip and was diagnosed with a “lower body injury,” which probably means groin.

Gaborik as well as Nolan skated in practice, but they are both listed as day- to- day. Both players skated before practice, but left when practice began.

Zidlicky, however, started practicing on Monday and is expected to play Thursday against the Sabers. I haven’t had a chance to see Zidlicky play yet this year, but he’s supposedly a solid offensive defenseman. He’s got experience, which is what the Wild need for their young team.

The Wild practiced with a slate of eight defenseman.

Arguably more important than Zidlicky, Pierre- Marc Bouchard practiced with the team Wednesday. Bouchard skated with the second line, and will suit up against Buffalo. Bouchard left the team before the Florida game with an apparent back injury.

Also, one Houston Aeros note: right wing Petr Kalus left the Aeros to go back to his native Czech Republic. Kalus, who was in his second pro season, is still under contract with the Aeros, so if he was to come back to North America, he would be Wild property.

Epic Division III Football Battle Comes Down to Six Inches

One of the best Division III football rivalries ever is played every October between two Catholic universities, St. Thomas and St. John's—an MIAC showdown that usually decides the division champion.

Obviously, this article will be biased, but since the vast majority of you probably didn't see the game, I can spin it any way I want—still, I'll try not to.

The game started out perfectly. A Tommies interception on the Johnnies' own 20 should be an easy six. Apparently not. A 4th-and-long and no sign of the punt unit or field goal team. What came next would have any football fan on their feet.

A triple-reverse left the St. Thomas quarterback wide open in the back of the end zone for a somewhat easy, somewhat stressful six.

I must admit, this is where my mind gets a little fuzzy. Maybe because I was a tad hung over from Friday night, or the fact that I was babysitting a friend who thought it was a good idea to have six shots of Everclear in six minutes. If you were wondering, that's not a good idea at all.

So, basically, I don't remember the rest of the first half, but I do know it involved a pooch punt by the Tommie quarterback, as well as a bunch of unsuccessful draw plays by the Tommies on 3rd-and-forever.

After a botched extra point by the Johnnies, halftime saw the Tommies up, 7-6.

Again, more babysitting by myself and convincing my friend not to puke in the middle of the stands, so we'll fast forward to the end of the third quarter.

The Johnnies scored another touchdown, and this time it was a botched two-point conversion, but it put them up, 12-7.

Again, more unsuccessful draw plays on 3rd-and-forever. Pandemonium ensues as the Tommies go three-and-out after three-and-out.

Then, hope. The Tommies pinned the Johnnies down inside their own 10 with time dwindling in the fourth quarter. It was fourth down, too, so St. Thomas was guaranteed good field position. Then, obviously a call from the sideline, the punter runs out of the back of the end zone untouched for a Tommies safety, 12-9.

The Tommies then mounted a surprisingly successful clutch drive that led them to the St. John's 1-yard line. The first try, I thought they broke the plane (I was standing right on the goal line), but apparently not. They get a bad spot, whatever.

Second down, inside 30 seconds left. The Tommies are inside the 1, but at this point it doesn't matter much. Their second push again appears to cross the goal line by quite a wide margin, but, again, no. The crowd, including me, is going ballistic at this point. It's nuts.

Third down. The running back gets a bad snap, and it's bad news. As the running back jumps up and over the pile, the ball (which he had cradled on his thigh because of the bad snap) pops straight up into the air, Johnnies recover, bad guys win.

So there you have it, and the St. John's reign of terror against St. Thomas continues.

Slacker Jack

So, when I made this blog, I aimed to cover the Minnesota Wild. However, that really hasn't happened Yes, this bl0g is for whatever I want to put on it, but mostly hockey.

There's already been three Wild games, yet no recaps, but I plan on getting on the ball tonight against Tampa Bay.

I have some explanations though, I wasn't just lazy. Actually, wait....

Opening night- I was on a date with a girl at Tom Reid's. The girl was boring, and there were some drunk guys who were always standing up in front of me, so I could never see.

@ATL- I don't remember what I was doing, but it was probably pretty important.

@FLA- I was at the library studying, but I got to listen to the game.

Western Clutching and Holding Association (WCHA) Game 1 Notes

Pre- Preface: Please excuse the spelling and grammar of this article, as I am writing it at 11:40 local time, right after I got home from the Gopher game.

Preface: Today was my first time on a city bus. Going from my school, to Mariucci arena, which is supposed to take 30 minutes, actually turned out to be an hour and a half because I didn’t know what I was doing. Because of that, I missed the whole first period. We pick the action up at the end of the first with the Gophers up 1-0 on a Ryan Flynn goal.

I was impressed with the play of freshman 17-year-old defenseman Aaron Ness. Ness forwent his senior year at Roseau and took his senior year of classes online to play for the Gophers.

He didn’t score, but he was involved in the offense a lot. He didn’t make many mistakes, which is high praise for a freshman. He’s a really fluid skater, which will make him a very valuable asset in the future.

Another young kid making an impression was sophomore Pat White. He scored a goal, and was all over the place in the offensive zone.

Personally, I hate the kid because he single handedly dominated my High School, Edina, in the state tournament last year. He scored two goals in a 2-0 win, which is really a testament to how good this kid is.

Goalies Alex Kangas and Kent Patterson split time in goal, with each playing 30 minutes. With only 15 total shots, neither proved much. Patterson let in one goal on five shots, on the first shot he faced.

Overall, we had 40- some shots on goal, and pounded British Columbia, but we could have done more. There was far too much cycling and not shooting in the offensive zone for my liking.

Once more, Canada’s system is backwards from ours: in Canada, the good players play juniors, and the average ones play college. In the US, the good players play college and the average ones play juniors.

As it turns out, a 3-1 win might not be that impressive after all.

Don't worry, the hockey is coming! the NHL starts tonight, at least the North American portion. I have a TV in my dorm, so I can actually follow the games, as opposed to the preseason where I had no clue what was going on because I didn't have a radio in my dorm. Anyways, live hockey! the banner raising in Detroit is going on right now.
Tomorrow I'm going to the Minnesota- Boston College preseason college hockey game and I'll report on how the team looks, even though I'm more of a North Dakota fan than a Minnesota one when it comes to college hockey.

LA Kings Relocation Tour 2008

The Los Angeles Kings continued their preseason relocation tour September 22nd, when they played at the Sprint Center versus the St. Louis Blues. The Kings won that game 2-1, but more important was the enthusiasm for hockey in KC. The fans want a team there, it’s a good sized market, the city would welcome a team….. and… BAM! 11,603 fans. Granted, it was a preseason game, and the Panthers get less fans than that during the regular season, but still, not a very good showing for a “hockey- starving” KC.

View From The Cheap Seats: Twins

I don't know why I said "View From The Cheap Seats", but it sure sounds good. Actually, it should be "view from no seats at all", because I refuse to go to the Metrodome, except for Red Sox games. Anyways, two things I've noticed about the Twins organization lately:

I tell you what though, the Twins love their versatile infielders:
-Harris can play at 2nd, 3rd and short and has done well,
-Punto can play pretty well pretty much everywhere
-Tolbert is turning into a super- utility man also, much like a young Nick Punto did
-Buscher can play 3rd and first obviously, and he's even taken grounders at second a couple times.
-The only Twins IF (besides Morneau) who has played only one position is Adam Everett, and he's been injured most of the season
Michael Cuddyer pinch- hit in the 9th inning of the 1st game of the Twins- O's doubleheader. Cuddyer grounded out to 1st, and will be relegated to pinch hitting duties the rest of the season. Cuddyer missed 63 games with foot & finger injuries

LA Kings Daily trade rumor

It seems like everyday you hear a new trade rumor about so- and- so going to LA in exchange for Kopitar, or a high round pick. Most of these are extremely stupid, and usually include an old, overpriced goalie usually named Khabibulin. Today's daily rumor comes from the Los Angeles Times, and yes, includes LA receiving an old, overpriced player.

Helene Elliott reports the Anaheim Ducks should trade defenseman Mathieu Schneider to the Los Angeles Kings, pointing out it would address their respective needs. The Ducks would free up necessary cap space to re-sign Teemu Selanne while Schneider's salary would push the Kings close to the salary cap "floor" as well as provide them with a veteran presence on the blueline. Ducks GM Brian Burke admitted discussing a trade with Kings GM Dean Lombardi but "nothing lines up yet".

Mathieu Schneider, don't get me wrong, is a solid, maybe even very good defenseman. That said, Los Angeles has got to show some foresight before they pull the trigger. LA's front office has got to know that their future is not now, its two, maybe three years from now. Signing a 39 year old defenseman won't help them when they need it, in the future. That's not to say a defenseman can't play past age 39, but with age comes incresed suseptapility to injury, and is that a risk the Kings are willing to take? If people think the Kings will pick up Schnieder just for the sole reason that his 5.75 million contract will get them over the cap floor, forget about it.

School started for me today, and it couldn't have come a better time. I was getting sick of doing nothing all day and partying all day, then coming back at all hours of the morning and doing it all again. So, yeah, that's pretty exciting. I had three classes today, Spanish, Poly Sci, and English. I started at 8:15 and ended at noon, and really liked it. Got some homework, but not much. Only one class tomorrow, I wonder what I'm going to do with myself.

The College Life

Here I am, all moved in to my cozy new dorm room. Classes don't start until the 3rd, so I'm just going to party until then, It'll be a fun couple of days. My dorm room is actually bigger than my room at home, but that's because my room was 10x10 and I shared it with my brother. So far, so good, although I am sacrificing some things, I drink my tea without milk. But yeah, life in an all- guys dorm: going to be amazing.

The Pickup Flying Under Everyone’s Radar

A lot of people are talking about pickups like Marian Hossa in Detroit , Naslund in New York, and rookie stars like Stamkos, Doughty, and Schenn, for good reason of course.

Me, I’m ranting and raving about draftees like Jake Gardiner, Aaron Ness, and Joe Gleason (for good reason, just wait a few years.)

The biggest pickup, for the future, of course, might be the Blues signing goaltender Jean-Philippe Lamoureux out of the University of North Dakota.

Lamoureux played three years with the USHL’s Lincoln Stars, averaging a .917 save percentage before moving on to the U of North Dakota where he was a full- time starter his junior and senior years, amassing ten shutouts and a .917 save percentage also.

The two knocks against Lamoureux are: Number one, he’s liable under pressure. I saw him play in the WCHA frozen four for UND, and he let in 6 goals versus Boston College. In the NHL spotlight, although in a small market like St. Louis, how he performs is anyone’s guess.

The other knock on Lamoureux is that he’s 5’8”. The only goalies under 5’ that have made it, that I remember anyways, are Chris Osgood, Manny Legace and Martin Gerber, and all three of those goalies have had trouble holding starting roles.

All told, one of the biggest things Lamoureux has going for him is his work ethic. He realizes his size holds him back to an extent, so he works on some other asset of his game. He’s got an amazing glove hand, one of the best I’ve ever seen, which kind of makes up for his lack of size.

Lamoureux is also in the Blues organization with former UND teammate and Hobey Baker winner TJ Oshie. Oshie should make the NHL team out of training camp, while Lamoureux will most likely get shipped out to the AHL or ECHL. Who knows though, the thought of someday playing with a former teammate might be just the confidence boost Lamoureux needs.

Wild Team Preview Part 1 of 4- Prospect Camp

Yesterday, the Wild announced their roster for their prospect camp, along with the announcement that the Wild will participate in the NHL’s prospect tournament in Traverse City, Michigan.

The prospect tournament includes ten draft picks, and those attending are:

Let me first say the obvious in that most of these kids won’t make the team. However, I see a few of them making it out of camp or at least in the foreseeable future.

I could see Colton Gillies making the club out of camp. Gillies had 24 goals and 47 points in 58 AHL games, which could really help out on the second or third line where scoring will be a big problem.

I think Cal Cluterbuck might also be worth a look towards the end of the season. He has put up decent numbers at the AHL level, although he might benefit from another season in the AHL; only time will tell.

Also, don’t sleep on Cody Almond. He played in the WHL last year and put up great numbers. He’s the Wild’s fifth round pick, and a long shot to make the team, but I think you could see him in a Wild uniform in the coming years.

Keep an eye on goaltender Anton Khudobin from Houston. He only played 12 games last year, posting good numbers, but I’d really like to see more games played out of him. Moreover, I don’t think the Wild can fit him in. Unless the Wild decide to carry three goalies which is highly unlikely, the Wild have no place to play him.

The Wild have a very young goaltending corps in Backstrom and Harding, so if Khudobin pans out in the near future, expect the Wild to use him as a trade chip.

Republican VP Speculation Turns on Alaska Govenrnor

With the hoopla of the Democratic National Convention over and done with, its time to start second- guessing politicians (very different than what already happens, right?). The Republicans, yet to name a VP nominee, are rumored to be looking at Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. I'm sure Palin would fit the bill well, but this has turned in to one big publicity stunt. No disrespect, but it seems like the Republicans are trying to match the Democrats stride stride- for- stride and blow- by- blow right now. Its kind of like, "well, you've got an African- American candidate, well then, we'll get a woman candodate." Like you've got a minority, and we might as well get one too (I'm talking minority in a political sence, anyways.) When it comes down to it, I dont care if we have a purple, blue, yellow, whatever color or gender president, as long as they get the job done.

Wild to have mascot?

Blah. I hate mascots. let me say that up front. Mascots, good for little kids, but I just don't see the point in having one. I don't know if the Ducks still have one, but I remember seeing a game in Anaheim with the Ducks' mascot "Wild Wing" swinging from the rafters. I was like, "what? Is this still a hockey game?" I just think they are pointless, and don't see a reason why the Wild would waste all the PR money to create one. Moreover, our team name is the "Wild," how do you create a catchy mascot name from that?

That said, the Wild will name their new mascot October 8th.

NHL- Northwest Division Preview

With the 2008- 2009 NHL season drawing closer, I figured I would jump on the bandwagon and do a division prediction. I’m going to do a Wild team prediction as well, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Now, I’ve seen a bunch of season predictions, most namely from The Hockey News, and they barely have anything in common.

That said, here are my predictions for how the Northwest division will shake out this year:

1-Edmonton Oilers

2- Calgary Flames

3-Colorado Avalanche

4- Minnesota Wild

5- Vancouver Canucks

Before you start bashing me (and you know you will), let me defend my predictions, or at least try to.

1- Edmonton Oilers-

They are the pinnacle of the term of solid. I mean the Oil are solid from the first line all the way through the fourth. You really can’t find a glaring hole on this team, and you have Potulny, Strudwick, and Schremp waiting in the wings. You could argue that they might have problems in goal, with Garon and Roloson, but I think they’ll be all right. They’re really well balanced- they kind of remind me of the ’03 Wild to an extent.

2- Calgary Flames-

The Flames are a one-line team, maybe two. I mean, Iginla’s still one of the best in the league, Bertuzzi’s fading, then guys like Langkow and Lombardi who are solid. And then there’s Andre Roy? Their defense is pretty solid, with Phaneuf headlining, as always. They could fill out two solid defensive pairings, but you’ve got to score goals to win games. Plus, they’ve got one untested backup, Curtis McElhinney.

3- Colorado Avalanche-

Too many questions surround the Avalanche this year. Their success hinges on Sakic and Forsberg—Sakic returning to the Avalanche, and both of them staying healthy. The question marks are even bigger in goal. Budaj is a solid backup, but just that, and Raycroft is a mystery. If they can get the Raycroft that played in Boston and not the one that played in Toronto, then the Avs will be way better off. If everything breaks right for Colorado, this could be a breakout year for them. I just don’t see it happening though, they’re too old.

4- Minnesota Wild-

The Wild are my team, and I just don’t get it; the moves they made make no sense to me. The ownership took a mediocre team and made it worse. Yes, they have an OK team on paper, but they’re one major injury away from… I won’t go into the Wild situation too much, keep your eyes peeled for my Wild preview.

5- Vancouver Canucks-

I’ve heard people calling for a rebuilding year in Vancouver, but not so much. Yes, I picked them last, but that doesn’t count for much; the Canucks are still going to be competitive this year. The Canucks still have the Sedins (at least this year), a solid defensive corps, and anyone who has Luongo is always competitive.

No NHL Olympians after ’10?

It appears the NHL’s history in the Olympics is in jeopardy after all. According to a CBC article, Gary Bettman is rethinking its policy of a midseason Olympic break.

It’s a “strain on all the players,” according to Bettman, which makes sense. That might have been the case with Free Agent center Peter Forsberg, who has played for four NHL teams, as well as three Olympics, six World Championships, and two World Cups of Hockey. Along with 706 NHL Games, 59 international games, it does a number on you, makes you more susceptible to injury.

If NHL players don’t go starting with he 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, I’m sure the popularity of Olympic Hockey wouldn’t drop off the map, or drop off at all. I’m sure this would spell the end for the World Junior Championships, and extend Canada’s dominance.

In the last ten Olympics, six different countries have won the gold medal: The Soviet Union, United States, Unified team, (a collection of Soviet Republics), Sweden, Czech Republic, and Canada.

Conversely, over the same ten-year span, only four different teams have won gold in the WJC: Russia, Czech Republic, The United States, and Canada. Canada is currently on a winning streak that spans a total of four years.

The NHL already has world tournaments in place to showcase NHL talent in the global realm, so I think it would be a plus if the IOC brought back the pre 1994 Olympics for college and junior hockey players to show their talent. It might put Team USA at a disadvantage, but that’s okay with me.

The Wild Want More Money Out Of Us

Like most NHL Clubs, make that most major sports clubs, the Minnesota Wild have introduced “premium pricing” for some of their home games, 12 to be exact.

“Premium pricing” is just a way to sugar- coat saying, “We’re going to charge you more,” as much as $20 more. According to sportswriter Michael Russo’s blog, “Single-game ticket prices will range from $24.00 to $98.00 and Premium game ticket prices will range from $29.00 to $118.00 (Facility fee and Ticketmaster charges not included).”

Why all this? The Minnesota Wild organization is already the most profitable in the NHL, and I’m no financial mind, but I know the Wild walk a fine line here.

The Wild play a very high stakes poker game, with their fans’ money. Its easy economics, really. Drive ticket prices up, and therefore less people who are able to afford to go.

I’ll use myself as an example. I’ve been to about 20 Wild games last year, and I sit in $80 club level seats most of the time. (I don’t pay that, my dad gets them through his job.) If I had paid for all those, that’s $1600 just for me. Say, tickets to “premium games” are $820, and 12 games are “premium,” that’s $9,840 for just those twelve games.

As you see in my example, $9,840 is a chunk of change. If the “New NHL” is all about branching out to the “casual fan,” you can’t tell me the majority of “casual” fans can afford that.

Heck, the majority of diehard hockey fans aren’t able to afford to see games at those prices.

Team USA Softball Loss a Good Thing For Olympic Softball?

Believe it or not, Team USA’s championship game loss to Japan might be a good thing for Softball’s future in the Olympics. Since softball’s induction to the Olympics in 1996, the U.S. has won gold in Atlanta ’96, Sidney ’00, and Athens ’02. The reason Softball has been voted out of the Olympics is because of Team USA’s dominance. For example, in Athens, Team USA outscored their opponents 51-1, and they had a combined Olympic record of 24-4 heading in to the Beijing Games. Softball and baseball, which are both being removed from the Olympics, are polar opposites. USA baseball is being blasted for not sending their best players, while Cuba brings in their best as well as Japan sending the Japanese Major- Leaguers. Meanwhile, it can be said that Team USA brings their absolute strongest team year after year. While the USA doesn’t have a professional softball league, the USA College Softball program is regarded as the best in the world. What are we to make of one loss? It may be a fluke, although it could be construed as Team USA’s international dominance faltering.

I saw this was an “open mic” prompt on Bleacher Report a while ago, and it got me to thinking. Apparently, I didn’t think hard enough or long enough on it, because I forgot about it.

Well, here it is again, I finally got around to it. I’m only going two lines deep, two defensive parings, and two goalies. I chose those numbers because with only seven years under their collective belts, the Wild’s talent pool just isn’t that deep. So, with out any further ado, here it is:

Gaborik- Walz- Brunette

Parrish -Hendrickson- Vorros

Mitchell- Burns

Bombidir- Nummelin

Fernandez

Harding

Before you start yelling at me, let me back up my selections. My criterion for selecting players was team chemistry. I was looking for the “All Heart Team” so to speak, and I did that because most all Wild teams aren’t put together on skill at all. Here’s a player- by- player breakdown of why they are on the “All Heart Team:”

LW- Marian Gaborik: self-explanatory, he’s been the heart and soul of this team since conception in 2000. The Wild’s first pick in the expansion draft, and was he ever worth it.

LW- Mark Parrish: Okay, so he’s a right wing, but I had to get him on the team somehow. He might not be the best scorer ever (he has a nose for the net though), but I’m not basing on talent like I said. He leads by example, and is a lot like Wes Walz

C- Wes Walz: yes, on talent alone, he isn’t a first line center. In the words of the late great Herb Brooks “we don’t have enough talent to win on talent alone.” I read an article in The Hockey News about a year ago, and they said “Walz will have 50 goals this year; score 20 and prevent 30.” He’s a great two- way forward, him and Parrish.

C- Darby Hendrickson: This is kind of a hat- tip to him. He was a good, not great player, yet will forever go down in Wild history. Hailing from Richfield, Minnesota, he was already a fan favorite. He also scored the first regular season goal in Wild history, in 2000 against the Philadelphia Flyers. He had to get on this team.

RW- Andrew Brunette: A hard nosed, down and dirty player who is a great playmaker. He had great chemistry with Gaborik, not to mention scoring one of the most important goals in wild lore, against the Avs in the 2003 playoffs, game seven. Not to mention, he pretty much destroyed the Wild, playing for those same Avalanche last season.

RW- Aaron Vorros: He plays the game with some kind of energy. If you’re looking for an “energy shift,” he’s your man. My mom calls him a psycho, but I like him. He’s always in the middle of everything, banging the bodies and creating scoring chances; a real catalyst.

D- Willie Mitchell: Probably the best defenseman the Wild have ever had, next to Burns. I still remember in the ’03 playoffs when he played a whole series with a broken jaw, I thought he was the coolest guy ever. He isn’t afraid to muck and grind in the corners ether.

D- Brent Burns: He hits, he scores goals, he makes plays; he’s pretty much superman. One of the NHL’s best young defenseman.

D- Brad Bombidir: He was called “the bomber,” and for good reason. He wasn’t that kind of defenseman who you’d remember for his defensive ability (which in Lemaire’s mind is a one way ticket out of town.) Nonetheless, he had a booming slapshot from the point.

D- Petteri Nummelin: Most people don’t like him, I do. I really think he’s a great skater and a good playmaker, not to mention a versatile asset. He played wing on the powerplay last year, and really impressed me. Not everybody, but hey

G- Manny Fernandez: Really solid, until he signed his new contract the year before we got rid of him. I know he’s been plagued by injuries, but the first couple seasons we had had him, there was no one better

G- Josh Harding: He can be a starter in this league, no doubt. We saw flashes of it last year when Backstrom played badly. He can really step up his game when he wants to, this kid’s a great young talent.

Honorable Mentions:

Derek Boogaard: Self- explanatory as well, he’s always ready to stick up for his teammates.

P-M Bouchard: Electric player to watch, he has amazing speed. He also resurrected the Savardian Spin- O- Rama.

Jim Dowd: We couldn’t forget him and his trademark “biker shorts” look, now could we?

Matt Johnson: Pre- Derek Boogaard tough guy built in the same mold

Sergei Krivokrasov: Nothing special, I love his last name though

Richard Park: One of my favorite Wild players, and who could forget his game six goal against the Avalanche in ’03?

Cliff Ronning: Also one of my very favorites. A tireless worker and a great playmaker

And last but certainly not least, Sergi Zholtok: A great player in so many assets of the game. RIP.

So there it is. Agree? Disagree? Don’t hesitate to chime in.

IOC Launching Investigation Into Chinese Gymnastics Team

According to a Yahoo! Sports blog, the IOC is going to open an official investigation on Chinese gymnast He Kexin’s age. This is also confirmed in an article on Times Online. This is a really long time coming, and shouldn’t surprise anybody that He is underage. This comes after a report that He is listed in Chinese documents as being of age 14.

I understand the IOC doesn’t want to be the one ruining China’s “coming out party,” but the party was already ruined with the ruthless speculation that came with the Chinese women’s gymnastics team’s performance.

Even if the Chinese women are confirmed to be underage (and it’s all been confirmed already), I don’t know what action the IOC can take. I’m sure they can wag their finger at China, but not much more. Since the Chinese government has access to everything, even private documents (including birth certificates), I’m not sure how much real difference it will make should the gymnasts be underage.

An international spectacle, a national embarrassment, yes. China might even get stripped of its women’s gymnastics medals, but who knows what the future will hold for the Chinese young (make that very young) women.

‎Olympic Baseball 11th inning rule

That has to be the dumbest rule ever put into play. Here's what the rule is: starting in the 11th, teams start with runners on 1st and 2nd, and the next batter in the lineup bats. For example. Team USA last night had the 8th batter in the lineup at second, 9th at first, and the leadoff man at the plate. How hard is that? Put down a good sacrifice bunt (your leadoff guy is usually your best bunter), and now you have guys on second and third, with one out. A hit scores one, extra base hit scores two, a sac fly sores one also. That seems like a pretty easy way to win a ball game.

It reminds me of the College Football overtimes; Really high scoring, but also terribly boring to watch.

The Marian Gaborik Soap Opera

In our last episode, we learned Wild GM Doug Risebrough and assistant GM Tom Lynn flew to Slovakia in order to talk contract with the star left-winger. Marian Gaborik’s agent, Ron Salcer, said that the Wild impressed Gaborik, in an article by The Star Tribune. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for how they handled that," says Salcer about the four-hour dinner. It also has come out that there were rumors that Gaborik might sign with Russian league team Spartak, although that has been fiercely downplayed and denied. While Salcer says his client was impressed with the meeting, whether he was impressed enough to resign is still a mystery. Risebrough says he’s open to negotiate with Gaborik during the season; allthough wheather that will be a distraction to the team is open for discussion. In a Wild.com story, Risebrough reveals that the Wild’s next move will come in the form of a proposal, which shouldn’t surprise anybody.

Gaborik is set to make 7.5 million this year, and the Wild are expected to offer him 8.5 million, but he could potentially get a lot more than that on a weak Free Agent market next year. Yes, Cammalleri, Afinogenov, Cole, Zetterberg, Connolly, Zherdev, Tanguay, Gaborik, Sykora, Sullivan, The Sedins, Niedermayer, McDonald, Gionta, Franzen, Comrie, etc. Are on the potential FA market has some big names on it, but expect half to three- fourths of those guys to get re-signed. If Gaborik doesn’t re- up with the Wild, I could easily see him going over ten million for a one year tenure.

In my opinion, if Gaborik won’t re- sign, the Wild front office won’t pony- up with enough cash, or even if his price tag doesn’t come down, the Wild should look elsewhere. Gaborik has a history of injuries, and, to be honest, Lemaire’s system doesn’t play to Gabby’s strengths at all. I think the Wild would be better off in the long run if the Wild were to trade him around the trade deadline, and here’s why: at the deadline, Gaborik’s price comes down, so he’ll look better to other teams, which will put his trade value at a premium. We then shop him around to a couple teams, maybe looking for three or four good young players or prospects that project well and that fit Jacques’ system better. That way, we could have what we really need, and let some other team worry about his contract.

Lopez Lomong: Lost Boy Finds Home

Track star and U.S. flag bearer Lopez Lomong has a story to tell, and inspiring one at that. Lomong was born in Southern Sudan in the midst of the Second Sudanese Civil War. At age six, Lomong was abducted while attending mass and pronounced dead by his family weeks later. Lomong, not dead but almost, escaped captivity and returned to his village. Lopez was one of the storied "Lost Boys" of Sudan, hiding during the days and wandering during nights. Lopez finally found himself in a refugee camp in Kenya, before Catholic Charities brought him to the US.

Lomong was forced into being a Child Soldier, which UN deemed a War Crime, yet he ran from his captors. In an interview with ESPN, he said, ""We could hear the soldiers talking and laughing, lighting cigarettes," he said. "The more they talked, the more we realized we could get out. We went through a hole in the fence and started running."" Lopez (which isn't his given name, by the way) is still running, although this time it isn't from the Sudan People's Liberation Army.

Lomong believes in the American Dream, and in a new start in a new country. "I came all the way here, so I have to run," he says "This is a peaceful country, a land of opportunity, so I believe my hard work will pay off one day. If I think like that, I run a little bit faster." Lopez has his new start, and his hard work is paying off. One year after becoming a naturalized US citizen, Lomong qualified for this year's Olympics in Beijing.

During the procession of the Olympic Flame into Beijing, there were many protests over the genocide in Darfur and Sudan. The protests were put down violently by the Chinese Government, although Lomong himself is a glaring reminder of the unthinkable violence and turmoil in Sudan. China's Communist Government supports the Government of Sudan, a fact that must be weighing constantly on Lomong's conscious. In his interview with ESPN, he voices this concern: "I'll say it's not a good thing for China to sponsor the government of Sudan and kill innocent people."

According to the interview, "The slaughter has been carried out by the Janjaweed horseback militia, a band of Arab nomads recruited and financed by the Khartoum government, which receives cash, arms and political protection from China." Lomong could be angry, he could be vengeful towards China because of all they've done to his homeland. Through all this commotion, Lopez has kept a cool head. Every month, he sends $200 over to his family in Sudan. Consequently, both him and his family thought each other were dead.

What can we learn from Lopez Lomong's story? His is a story of tremendous courage, maturity, and determination. I was taught, when writing articles, to keep your opinion out of it; though I think I'm going to break my own rules here. What's happening in Darfur is wrong, and it takes remarkable courage to speak out in the face of adversity like Lomong continues to do. Kidnapped at the age of six, Lomong had to grow up fast. Yes, we can all learn something from the story of Lopez Lomong-not only a word class athlete, but a world class individual as well.

If you were the commissioner for one day, what is the one rule you would absolutely have to change?

So, I'm doing a debate on a sports forum, and that was my question. I wrote a piece on it, thought it wad pretty good, and here it is:

The one rule I would change would be the two minute penalty for flipping the puck over the glass in your defensive zone, no question. The Rule was put in place with the new CBA after the lockout year. We all knew the plan; open up the game, create and call more penalties in order to increase scoring. So, this stupid rule was born. I'll tell you why it was created, it was created so that teams on the penalty kill couldn't flip the puck over the glass in they're defensive zone if they were pressured. I'm all for the penalty there, killing the flow if play shouldn't be allowed. The problem is when its called, not how its called. To many times I've seen a defenseman or goalie try to play the pass up the glass to a forward, only for the puck to sail on them and go over the glass. There you go, that team's shorthanded, other guys score-that stuff decides games. What will it take for the NHL to abolish this stupid rule?

I can just see it: Eastern Conference final, game seven, Montreal- Pittsburgh. Second overtime and the game's tied at two, emotions are running high, but skill and finesse dominate both sides. This is the game the NHL wants fans to see-showcasing Sidney Crosby's diving ability-er, uh, I mean-skill. Koivu gains the line, dumps the puck, and the Habs go off for a change. Fleury skates behind his net to play the puck, aiming for a long breakout pass off the wall to catch Montreal in the change. Instead, the puck climbs the glass, hits a seam, and flies into the crowd. Montreal goes on the powerplay, and that's all they need. Koivu to Komisarek to Andrei Kostitsyn who puts it away.

Is that the way you want a game like that decided, on a call like that? Hardly storybook.

Thirdly, the whole thing is counterintuitive. Since you were playing Mite hockey, coaches were telling you to not pass it up the middle. Well, all of a sudden, change all that. Don't pass it up the boards, off the boards, because you don't want to take an unnecessary penalty. All of a sudden, you might want to pass it up the middle after all.

The (Other) Great One

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Michael Phelps? The kid's a fish, and I say kid because he's only 23. London 2012 is almost a certainty for him, barring injury of course, Chicago 2016 is in his sights as well, which would put him at age 31. Not that I'm booking tickets already, but Phelps is amazing and has a lot left in the tank, apparently. Everyone knew Phelps was something special when he jumped in the pool for his first Olympic Games in 2000. The Baltimore Bullet set his first World Record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:08.26, capturing the Gold Medal. He went on to post two new World Records, three Olympic Records, two American Records, and leaving Athens with six Gold's. He had already come a long way since Sydney in 2000, where he finished 5^th in the 200 butterfly. By now, everyone knows how he did in Beijing, eight Gold Medals along with seven World Records. Phelps' dominance extends far beyond the realm of Olympic Swimming. The 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007 Swimming World Championships also belonged to Phelps, as well as the 2002 and 2006 Pan Pacific Championships. In the World Championships, he finished first 16 times, second three times, setting 13 World Records and two American Records thus far in his World Championship career. In his two Pan Pacific Championships, Phelps finished first eight times, second three times, and also set four World Records.

With Phelps passing Mark Spitz's previous record of seven gold medals in dramatic fashion, many people wonder where Phelps' place in history will be. I must admit I'm a little biased being a swimmer myself, but I think history will be favorable to Phelps. Believe me, swimming nine days in a row is no easy feat—most days multiple times a day—and eight of the nine days being finals is just an incredible physical, and mental, feat. Phelps swam 1,500 meters in finals alone this Olympics, and upwards of two miles total, which really speaks to his physical strength and ability. Swimming, in my opinion, takes all the ability it does to say, play hockey. Swimming takes physical strength (believe it or not, water is heavy), incredible endurance, as well as remarkable mental toughness and determination. In that sense, swimming is every bit as much a sport as Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Football, or Hockey.

That said, I think Phelps has to be in the same sentence as Wayne Gretzky, Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, and the greats of sport. What Michael Phelps did no one has done in the history of the sport. In fact, only one Olympian, Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina, has more total medals than Phelps. In fact, a New York Times article cited that, if Michael Phelps was a country, he would rank fourth in gold medals, behind China, Team USA, and Germany, and 14h in total medals. He's been honored with awards too numerous to mention, but including USOC and USSA Athlete of the Year, four- time World Swimmer of the Year, as well as being a six- time American Swimmer of the Year. There are not many athletes that can say they were the best in their sport six times in a row.

I was watching Sports Center the other day, the morning after Phelps won his eighth Gold, and they were talking about it, and used all the clichés that sports media minds use while not really saying anything. They said it was a great feat, and good for the sport, but they also said something that really caught me off guard: they said "nobody's going to remember Phelps in 2o years." Come on, maybe in major sports circles, but if you actually pay attention, you'd for sure know who he is. Jesus, give the man some respect, he just did something most people couldn't even dream of doing. So much for being nonpartisan, ESPN; I think that quote reinforces the idea that they only care about Basketball and Football, and that's the sad reality. Everyone remembers what Mary Lou Retton did in 1984, and that was 24 years ago; I still have an autographed Wheaties box with the 1984 Team USA gymnastics team on it. Phelps may well end up being more popular then Retton, only time will tell.

I'm not kidding, it was nasty. I don't go golfing very often, this was my first time in maybe a month. So, I guess that's how whatever it is could've gotten in my golf bag. Anyways-- it was a squirrel or something-- died, in my bag. So, I got to my tee time (keep in mind I didn't know the dead thing was in my bag yet) and I was like oh, shit something smells. So, I took all my clubs out of my bag, and noticed some of my clubs had fur on the grips. I was like, this can't be good, so I shook out my whole bag and this like -- animal pelt came out. It was disgusting, and it smelled terrible. So, I put all the clubs in my car, opened up all the windows, and rented clubs for the day. As soon as I got home I threw out my bag and threw my clubs in a ton of bleach.

Pittsburgh, of course, because Crosby is Versus’ wet dream. Washington, because Versus is also in love with AO, but The Caps are also much improved. Boston, meh, same with the Rangers. Dallas is always a good game also, and they are expected to be a serious contender this year.

Shades of the “Old China”

The Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Beijing were supposed to be, some said, China's "coming out party. They were, so to speak, turning over a new leaf in China's history; where we could forget about global incidents like Tiananmen Square in 1989 and celebrate China's openness, not only to the athletes and spectators, but the global economy as well. China needed the Olympic Games to re- establish their global dominance they once had and welcome the world, both figuratively and literally, in order for then to see the "new China" they had built. The spectacular first impression they gave us was the Opening Ceremonies, starting with 2008 drummers beating their light drums in order to welcome us to the Games. Unfortunately, Russia invaded Georgia that night, but nothing could outshine the four hour spectacle that was the Opening Ceremonies. Since then, various controversies have sprung up involving China, which the communist Chinese government has downplayed. Since the Open, it has come out that some of the fireworks in the Opening Ceremonies were computer generated, whether or not the Chinese gymnasts are underage, and of course, The 9 year old girl, Lin Miaoke, who supposedly sang Ode to the Motherland was actually lip-synching.

Audiences were captivated by the hundreds, maybe thousands, of fireworks that welcomed the world to the stadium called "The Bird's Nest." At first, the fact that some of the fireworks were computer generated didn't bother me a bit. As long as it looks cool, who cares, right? I mean, it might look different in Beijing, but no one knows except those actually in the stadium. After some thinking, and some—but not much—research, I found the whole scenario smelling fishy. From what I've found out, if a lot of fireworks go off simultaneously, like we saw in the Opening Ceremony or the steps leading up to The Bird's Nest, it would be impossible to see all of them. In other words, there would be a noise, but no flash of color that you usually see. Apparently, the Chinese government didn't want audiences –specifically American audiences—to hear the fireworks, but not see them. So, the Chinese government, who is censoring all media out of Beijing, grabbed hold of the main TV feed, and did some "touch- up" work. How they did this is beyond me, but this begs the question: Why would the Chinese be so concerned about appearances? I realize that they wanted it to look nice and perfect, but in a production as big as the Opening Ceremonies, who's going to notice something as small as a few fireworks?

Of course, with—and even before—Team USA lost to team China there was much speculation that the Chinese gymnasts were under the age limit. The age limit rule, for all you non- gymnastics fans out there (of which I am one), states that a gymnast must be of age 16 within the calendar year the Olympics are being held. That is, a gymnast could be 15, if she is 16 before the end of 2008. That said, the Chinese gymnasts are still way underage (Remember, these are all my opinions). In fact, SI.com just released an article saying that the Chinese government had papers proving that gymnast He Kexin is underage. The AP found the papers on a Chinese website, the story says, and the next day when the AP went to investigate, the website was taken down. Yang Yilin, the youngest one in my opinion (again, these are all opinions), isn't even mentioned in the article.

In Equestrian and Horse Racing, I know they age Horses by their teeth, why can't they do that in gymnastics? Not that I'm trying to de- humanize the Chinese gymnasts, that's not what I'm after at all. When do people loose all their baby teeth? Age 11, 12 maybe? If you'll took next time, Yilin is missing a couple teeth, presumably baby teeth. My brother just lost the same teeth, and he's 11. By that assumption, she's way too young to compete, but then, there's a lot of assuming there.

The age limit rule of 16 isn't just an arbitrary number; it's for safety more than anything. I'm not a girl, I've never been one, but I know I hit puberty around 14 or 15. So, say girls hit puberty around 16- makes sense, doesn't it? For one, 16 year olds look different from younger girls; the whole puberty thing, a girl's hips get wider and all that, they just don't look like younger girls. For two, when you're 16 (and we go off the assumption that 16= puberty), you fear more. That's why you see little kids jump off of everything and anything, fall down, and do it again. Your sense of risk comes in to play, which is, I think, why the Chinese gymnasts are fearless, they're sense of risk hasn't kicked in yet. Oh, there's one more thing: it really doesn't matter if the Chinese are underage, because the Chinese government can edit their citizen's birth certificates.

One highlight of the Opening Ceremony was Lin Miaoke, the adorable nine year old who sung
Ode to the Motherland at the Opening Ceremony. From what I've found out, the Chinese government held an "American Idol" style contests in order to pick the singer at the Ceremony. The winner of the contest was seven year old Yang Peiyi, but she was quickly dismissed by the Chinese as "not cute enough." In the words of the Chinese, she was described as having "a chubby face and crooked baby teeth." So, another contest was held by the government, this one a beauty pageant, and the winner, nine year old Lin Miaoke. Here's the cruelest part: they told Lin Miaoke that she was going to sing! So, she was singing, though it was Yang Peiyi's voice that everyone herd. The Chinese government played it off as though two families would get the glory of being in the Opening Ceremonies instead of one, and maybe that's true, but I think it's pretty cruel to undermine and use a nine year old's innocence to a country's advantage.

So, how is the "new China" shaping up? Could be better, in my opinion. Like the "old China" that was supposedly left in the past, China reminds us once again that they have both feet firmly planted in the communist camp. What do all three sad stories have in common? The Chinese government, that's what. While I realize that no one is willing to interrupt China's "big moment" with bad news, it might be slowly happening anyways, and this time China's bringing it upon itself.

Relentless American Media Rears Its Ugly Head

The Downfall of American mainstream media is showing yet again. With blogging and news websites gaining in popularity, traditional media like newspaper and television must go more in depth to find stories that no one else has in order to gain viewership (or readership). This destructive obsession showed once again during last night's women's gymnastics team competition. I must prelude this by saying I'm not a gymnastics fan, although I do enjoy watching it every four years and I definitely respect the concentration and physical ability they take to perform. Team USA really looked great through the first two events, but fell apart shortly after. If you don't know by now, Alicia Sacramone fell first on the Balance Beam, then fell on her Floor Exercise. Team USA's gold medal hopes were crushed, much to the chagrin of NBC. Of course, Headlines all over the country proclaimed "it's all Sacramone's fault." It's just like the American media outlets to blame the hopes of an American gymnastics team squarely on the shoulders of a 20 year old girl. Needless to say, the poor girl was in tears, but that isn't the point. The point is, it isn't all Sacramone's fault, like the major media outlets would like to believe. The USA gymnastics team is comprised of six gymnasts, five of which competed at least once. Sacramone scored 14.1 on the balance beam (I didn't see her score on the floor exercises.) Like I said, I'm not an export in gymnastics, nor do I pretend to be, and it'll show here: I believe there are three gymnasts per team in a rotation, so two bad scores really shouldn't kill your score. In fairness, I don't think anyone on our team preformed well enough to beat the Chinese.

Regardless of how old they are, the Chinese really put on a clinic last night. I believe team USA needed to turn in an almost perfect performance in every event- from everyone- to have a shot to beat the Chinese eight year olds. Say what you like about "oh, we were only down one point going into the last event"; but the Uneven Bars were China's best event, by far. Besides, lets look on the bright side, even if nobody else does; I'll be their voice of reason. We got second in the world, which is pretty good. We still posted a really good round, despite all the mistakes by the team (yes, the whole team); we did beat third place team Romania by a whopping 5.1 points. I don't know, maybe its just me. I've been on enough hockey teams to tell you that there's no way you can single an individual out for a team's performance.

Ah Merde, Ces Gars-là Sont Rapides

That means "Oh shit, these guys are fast" in French. The French went on record as saying "The Americans? We're going to smash them. That's what we came here for" before the 4x100 free relay. The French came into the race as favorites, and they didn't disappoint; although you couldn't script a better ending to a race then this one. The event started with a team of Nathan Adrian, Cullen Jones, Ben Wildman- Torbriner, and Matt Grievers, posting a World Record time of 3.12.23 in the qualifying heats. Three of the four swimmers on that relay team wouldn't even race in the finals for team USA. The finals were about as hyped up as a swimming race can be, with team France providing the USA with some bulletin board material. Team USA fielded a finals team of Michael Phelps, Garett Webber- Gale, Cullen Jones, and Jason Lezak. Everyone was writing the Americans off early, saying that every American team member needed to swim "the perfect race" for them to have a chance to win. Phelps led the race off for team USA, with Leveaux leading off for France. It was the Aussies though, that took the early lead, with Sullivan going out in 22.48 and coming back in 24.76 to put the Australians in first after the first hundred meters; everyone knew it would take a World Record to win the relays after team USA's showing in the prelims, but five teams were under the world record after the first leg. Fast forward to the last lap, with France leading with a total time of 2.42.86. Bernard was the anchor for France, and Lezak for the USA; Bernard went out in 21. 27, and Lezak in 21.50, so Team France was leading by a hair with 50 meters to go. That's when the magic happened. A great turn by Lezak, coupled with Bernard slowly dying, led to a virtual tie at the backstroke flags, 7 meters to go. Lezak was coming on really strong, but the cushion Bernard had built for himself during the first 50 meters ultimately saved him.

Lezak just touched Bernard out at the wall, with Bernard taking an extra stroke he didn't need to, which added critical time. Lezak came back in 24.56, for a split time of 46.06, and Bernard came back in 25.46 for a 46.73 split. When all was said and done, three teams were under the old World Record, but it was Team USA with a time of 3.08.24 beating out France's time of 3.08.32 by eight hundredths of a second. Team USA had claimed the gold medal from favorite France, as well as setting the World Record for the second time that day.

Gretzky to LA: The Trade That Changed the Game for the Better?

Wayne Gretzky's legendary NHL career spanned 20 NHL seasons, spanning two leagues and five teams. The majority of his career was spent between two teams, Edmonton and Los Angeles. Gretzky was traded to LA before the 1988-89 season, which drastically increased hockey's popularity in America. All of a sudden, there was the star of the National Hockey League playing in one of America's major media markets. Gretzky was a huge hit in LA, and Gretzky (and all LA Kings) merchandise was flying off the shelves. In fact, the Kings changed their colors from the old school purple, yellow and white, to the sleeker silver and black for Gretzky's first season as a King, proving once again that the NHL is a business above all things. Los Angeles embraced Gretzky, and the Kings were a threat to such media mainstays as the Lakers, Clippers, and Raiders in terms of popularity.

While Los Angeles hockey fans were thrilled with the Canadian export of The Great One, it can be said that LA is not your prototypical hockey market. 80 degrees and sunny conjures up the thought of baseball games, and certainly not hockey. This got the league thinking: if hockey works in a non- traditional market like LA, why wouldn't it work in other non- traditional markets? So the so called "sun belt" expansion began. In '91-'92, the San Jose Sharks join the league, followed by the Tampa Bay franchise in '92-'93, Anaheim and Florida in '93-'94, Phoenix in '96-'97, Carolina in '97-'98, and Atlanta in the '99-'00 expansion. Some of the added teams have been successes, San Jose is a perennial playoff contender, Anaheim has a cup, as well as Carolina and Tampa Bay. How ever, the failures—really fail. Atlanta had promising young players once upon a time, but then fell off the face of the earth, taking Florida and Phoenix with it.

Before you blame the failures on commissioner Bettman, hear me out—or rather, read me out, if you will. Los Angeles' owner at the time was Bruce McNall; yes, the guy who can be linked to the rising tide of player salaries by making two million off the sale of the Kings (yes, there is more to it then that, but I won't get into it). Among other things, McNall may have suggested expansion before Bettman took office in 1993. Before McNall's tragic downward spiral, he was named as the Chairman of the NHL Board of Directors in 1992. It is believed it is then he suggested the expansion of the NHL into non- traditional hockey markets, even though it was a plan implemented by Bettman.

The Deals Never Made

I was meaning to post this a while ago, but hey, its summer, I'm lazy, that's okay. Looking back at the trade deadline, there was really very little action aside from the two or so blockbuster deals. So, the second guessing begins on my part. The deal I was semi- surprised didn't go down was Julio Lugo to... anyone. Lugo has been disappointing Sox fans for way too long; making errors, hitting for a mediocre average, and almost zero power. When it comes down to it, the Sox have 36 million resons to keep Lugo, but I'm unimpressed. I don't think there was a big market for overpriced shortstops, but the Sox have to cut ties with this guy. They've got a younger, and all around better shortstop in Jed Lowrie waiting in the wings. Every time they bring up Lowrie to fill in for Lugo and his laundry list of injuries, he impresses me. I don't think Red Sox management has a choice on this one, Lugo has to go.

Not Minnesota Nice

I am watching today's Twins game, they're playing the White Sox, so there's a history of trouble. Denard Span is at bat, in a 4-3 game, with nobody on and no out. Span shows bunt, and gets hit in the leg by a Danks fastball. Pierzynski argues with home plate umpire Marty Foster that Span squared around to bunt, and thus it should be called a strike. As Span was trying to get out of the way, his bat crossed home plate, as he dived forward to avoid the pitch. Fostercalls the pitch a strike, and Gardenhire comes out to argue. He gets thrown out and at the end of his tirade, kicks his hat a good 30 feet. At that, the crowd, on its feet by now, starts throwing their hats on the field also. It was funny to start with, but gets real old, real fast. The "fun" ends when some knucklehead throws a baseball on the field and Ozzie takes his team off the field. A few minutes later, order is restored-- in the stands at least. The White Sox pitchers have been tossing up beach balls after the incident, and the Twins are just killing them. As I type this, Span walks, and scores on a Mauer single. It just gets better and better as Kubel hits a three run bomb almost in the upper deck. 7-4 Twins.

My first reaction to this trade was "what the hell is Epstien thinking?" That is still what I'm thinking, but I've come to terms with it a little more. I thought Manny needed to go, but I never thought it would happen mid season, even though it had to for us to get anything of value in return for him. Left field at Fenway is always an adventure, but if Bay can learn to play the monster fairly well, I think he's comparable to Ramirez-- he might even be an upgrade. I say that not only because of Manny's history of on field antics, but the fact that they sometimes came at the expense of the team. When we were in Anahiem, it was ugly, but at least Manny showed up. This current homestand, its like he's phoned it in already, and you can not tolerate that in the midst of a pennant race. So in a way, Epstien's sending a message to his team as well as changing personnel.

We've established the Manny for Bay deal is more or less a wash in my opinion, but that's not the whole trade. We also shipped off reliever Craig Hansen to the Bucks. Hansen- to be honest, sucks, so you'd normally be happy to see him go. This confuses me though because our bullpen is already one of the worst, if not the worst in the league. True, we could still deal for a reliever through waivers, though its not probable that we would get a real quality one. And yes, its true that we have some great young starting pitching in the minors, and bringing the kids up and sticking them in the 'pen would help out, look at Masterson for example. While its always a roll of the dice, I don't think blowing up the 'pen and starting all over is a good idea, especially mid season.

Wild Make Another Roster Move; For The Worse, Of Course

Yesterday, the Wild released center Mark Parrish. True, Pear wasn't the best offensive player, and not the best defensive forward ether; If management was looking for numbers, I guess cutting Parrish was an easy decision. Management should know better though, games aren't played on paper, and we saw that in the 03' playoffs. Mark Parrish reminds me of one Wes Walz by the heart and determination he has. Pear has a ton of heart, and he leads by example every shift. On a hockey team you need to have snipers, enforcers, grinders, playmakers, agitators, and role players. Parrish would be one of your role players. Over the course of a long season and the playoffs, you need someone who will stand up in the dressing room and demand accountability from every player on the team; he's a player who doesn't just talk the talk, but also walks the walk. True, Parrish isn't a great player, he might not even be an above average player, but I believe he was the character guy who held the Wild together.

Oh, and while I was at orientation for St. Thomas, the Wild locked up P-M Bouchard long term, which is a very good thing. I think they should have signed him sooner, but whatever, at least we did. We'd be in deep trouble if he wasn't in a Wild uniform come the start of the season.

College Orientation

So, I haven't posted about my first college experiences yet, so here we go. My first thought was, it was pretty boring. Yes it was bigger than High School, but the more I get into it, it really won't be that bad. I have three classes Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and one on Tuesday and Thursday. So much for a balanced schedule I guess. Well it won't be all bad. My classes start at 8:30 three days a week, pretty much straight through until noon, which gives me the rest of the day (and night) to work and--- study- yeah, that's it, study. Same thing Tuesday and Thursday, except I only have one class starting at 10:00, so I get to sleep in a little bit. But yeah, all my classes are around the same area, so it really isn't much difference from High School.

I'm a Red Sox fan, why am I posting about the Twins? These damn West Coast swings, that's why. I can usually catch the Twins game at 7:00, and it usually ends before the Sox game at 9:00, how convenient. Have you seen how these guys have pitched as of late? (The hitting hasn't been half bad either.) Slowey, Baker, Perkins, Hernandez? Yes, Livan Hernandez, who we got to eat innings has pitched well, and has lived up to the billing of the ace of the Minnesota staff. Anyone who follows baseball seriously knew that these kids would come around, but in the heat of a pennant race? Amazing as it is, I left one guy out of the rotation, Nick Blackburn. He deserves his own praise because he came into the season as an untested rookie, and pitched better than anyone could have expected. He is pitching well enough to be the ace of the staff. Only problem is, we have six capable pitchers that could be the ace of the staff. A very good problem to have, and I say six pitchers because there is a very good one waiting in the wings in AAA Rochester. That pitcher is Fransisco Liriano, who was out all last year with Tommy John surgery. He's 8-2 down there, and hopping mad, but we just can not find a spot for him. That's a very, very good problem to have this deep into a pennant race.

Open letter to Yankee fans

Grow some balls. Seriously, I know Red Sox fans have a reputation for being bad, but you guys have no class. Your team sucks, so you bitch and moan and piss and vinegar, yet your front office does nothing because its a business after all, and if your team sucks yet you still make money no one cares. I'm sick of hearing how badly done to you are because you haven't won a World Series in who- cares- how- long. Oh, and then there's the media ass kissing. Its ridiculous how much credit FOX and ESPN give the Yankees even though they probably aren't even going to make the playoffs. I guess that's just how it is with big market teams; maybe that's mainstream media's fault. I'm not done yet; I've got one more bone to pick with fair-weather Yankee fans (that's most all of them.) You can boo Red Sox players, I'm all for that, it makes the game more fun. At the All Star game though? Please. This is our showcase, to show off our league's stars, yet half of them get booed. Its fine at a normal Yankees- Red Sox games but it just doesn't seem right at the All Star Game; but maybe that's just me. At the Futures Game for example, Red Sox prospect Che- Hsuan Lin was the MVP, yet he got booed.

Have fun next year with the new stadium, Yankee fans, because a mediocre team and $10+ beers will drive away the bandwagon fans real fast.

So, I've been lazy the last couple days, give me a break; it's my birthday. The wild haven't taken a break though, they've made a bunch of little signings with not much risk-- except that Owan Nolan character. The Wild have a list of priorities on their "Hockey Ops" blog and have supposedly addressed all of their needs. Lets take a look, shall we?

Hockey Ops- Priority: Assemble one of the top defensive corps in the Western Conference. The last two Conference champions had great defensive units that were very strong offensively and defensively

Retained pending free agent Nick Schultz.

... Added an accomplished top-4 defenseman in Marek Zidlicky.

Me- Not exactly, Schultz is a solid defenseman, and so is Zidlicky, but we've still got Johnsson and Hill, who are serviceable, but not top in the Western conference b any stretch of the imagination. We also signed Marc-Andre Bergeron, which is a plus. We're getting better, but not quite there yet.

Hockey Ops- Priority: Increase offense and puck possession without sacrificing the solid defensive identity of our team.

Changed from older, defensive veterans on defense to more mobile, puck-moving players in Zidlicky and Marc-Andre Bergeron.

... Brought back Andrew Brunette to help offensive zone puck possession and create more goals.

... Added Antti Miettinen to show more offense from the team’s two-way players.

Me- Okay, mission accomplished I guess. I hate that we have a “defensive identity” though; why can't we have an “offensive identity?” Sure Bruno's going to create goals, but who's going to score 'em?

Hockey Ops- Priority: Focus on retaining and growing the young core of players on our team who will continue to get better and take us to the next level.

Did not trade young players on the team such as Mikko Koivu, Brent Burns and James Sheppard at the trade deadline or the Draft.

... Retained young prospects Colton Gillies and Benoit Pouliot at the same time and moved up in the Draft to ensure the obtaining of Tyler Cuma.

Me: Nor did we trade players like Marian Gaborik or Niklas Backstrom. I think management gets the big “so what?” on this one. And oh, look, another defensive defenseman!

I think management forgot that you have to score goals to win hockey games.

The Blake Wheeler saga

What are we to make of rookie sensation to be Blake Wheeler? The Phoenix Coyotes’ first round pick, 5th overall, in 2004 has already jumped- ship on Phoenix. What made the blue chip prospect Wheeler not sign with the young upstart Coyotes? Upon further research, money wasn’t the problem. He was offered the maximum rookie contract, which I believe is around $900,000. Why he left for greener pastures, then, remains a mystery. There was talk of Wheeler playing for his hometown Minnesota Wild, which would make a lot of sense since he played his High School hockey at Breck, an Episcopal school near Minneapolis. He also played his College Hockey at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Or maybe Wheeler was looking to play with former teammate Phil Kessel in Boston. With Wheeler putting up a respectable 15 goals and 35 points in 44 games in the challenging WCHA, I think he could make an immediate impact on Boston’s third or fourth line.

Wild Update- July 1

The Wild have made their presence known in the 2008 NHL offseason. Coming off a rough season in which they got blown out of the water by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round of the playoffs, some moves are on the horizon. The Wild acquired defenseman Marek Zidlicky from Nashville in exchange for a second round pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft, and forward Ryan Jones. Zidlicky's a really solid offensive defenceman; a second round pick next year is a pretty steep price, and I've never heard of Ryan Jones, so I think we won that deal.
We also re- acquired Andrew Brunette as a free agent from Colorado. Brunette was the hero of the '03 playoffs, scoring the OT winner against those same Avalanche in the first round. I don't think we acquired many goals with Brunette, but who knows, he had a breakout year last year in Colorado.

You can fill in the blanks if you want, but my life pretty much sucks right now. I went to the dentist yesterday, and they were like "how's your diet, do you drink a lot of pop?" I said yes, I drink pop, because that's true, I drink about two pops a day. My dentist said you might want to cut down to one, and switch from Mountain Dew to Coke because Mountain Dew is so acidic and it's eating away at my teeth a little. My mom took that as "your teeth are gonna fall out of your head if you don't stop drinking pop right now." So, now I have to stop drinking pop for a while, and struggle through my mom's lectures all the time. Not my idea of a fun summer.

I hate fantasy baseball this time of year

I love it all other times of the year, but hate it during the summer. This is a problem because the majority of baseball season is during the summer. Because it's the summer, and because I'm lazy, I usually end up getting out of bed sometime after noon; sometimes quite a bit after noon. Consequently, most days roughly a third of baseball games are played at noon, 12: 30, 1:00 or whatever. Its worse with games on the west coast, where games are before noon. So, I end up sleeping through roughly a third of my team's games, which leaves me a disproportionate number of games to gain points. To make things worse, its a daily league, so this happens pretty much every day. Oh well, maybe I won't make any roster changes and still win, like I did in hockey.

I have two friends, like I have already mentioned, going in this first round of the NHL draft. They are Jake Gardener and Aaron Ness. They're both my boys, and though I don't know them really well, I'm excited for both of them and eager to see them succeed. Now, Ness is headed to the U of Minnesota, and Gardener to Wisconsin. Gardener is NHL ready in my opinion, but if eather of them need any seasoning, the WCHA (which is the best College Hockey conference in the nation) is the place to do it.

Played golf for the first time this year

So, I swung the clubs for the first time this year today. I had to use my dad's clubs, because my own clubs are too small for me and I'm too poor to buy new ones. I more or less picked up where I left off last year. I didn't keep score, I didn't count strokes- I wanted to give myself a nice, laid back opportunity to have some nice swings, and some not so nice ones. There was more of the latter. I was driving the ball consistently, like last year, I was in the 150- 200 yard range, which is pretty good for me. I wasn't adding much distance, but I hit a good 7 out of 9 fairways. My irons were another story though. Like last year, I didn't hit for too much power, and when I did, my accuracy wasn't good at all. My chipping from say 50 yards on in, though, was money. Putting was ugly as always. I two putted, or more every hole. Yuck.

So, my graduation was last Thursday night, and then the all- night party at the High School after that. The whole graduation ceremony was kind of boring, honestly. I didn't feel relieved, or happy, or sad; I was just like "so this is it, huh?" The day of graduation was really crappy. It was raining and there was a tornado warning, but we still pressed on. All of my pictures are taken at my house or in the parking garage under Northrop where we got organized. My parents dropped me off a couple blocks from the auditorium because the rain had let up a bit, only to start up even harder when I got out of the car. Oh, what fun. The ceremony itself wasn't too bad. It was like two hours, but sitting in a robe for two hours seemed like nine.

Real fast, I'll go over the all- night party. The theme of the party this year was "school of rock" which isn't a a real theme in my humble opinion. We got back to the High School at 10:00 or 11:00 at night, and they had a Casino set up in the HS cafeteria which I played until 1:00 or 1:30 in the morning. The way it worked was you got $50,000 worth in chips (hypothetical money, of course) and another fifty thousand at midnight. They had blackjack, poker and all that stuff; I ended up with like $600,000 plus at the end of the night. Anyways, you cashed your chips in at the end of the night and got tickets that you put in drawings to win stuff. Then they did an American Idol type deal which was pretty funny. Some of them were, others were just sad because some of the people took this thing really seriously. To cap the night off, they had Comedy Sportz in the auditorium which is usually pretty funny, but at 3:00 in the morning? Not so much.

Minnesota High Schoolers in the 2008 NHL draft (Rounds 1- 3)

The NHL Central Scouting Bureau's final rankings came out a while ago, and it's time I provided my commentary on the Minnesota High School players in the draft since I've seen all of them play quite a few times. I'll put the CSB final rankings in parenthesis, as well as my comments on the player.

Jake Gardener, Minnetonka HS, D (23)

He's as close to the total package as you can get outside of the first five picks. If he's a great offensive defenseman now, he could be a star with some seasoning in the WCHA.

Aaron Ness, Roseau HS, D (27)

He'll be drafted as a defenseman, but I guarantee he won't stay that way. He's got great offensive skill, he's like a 4th forward out there, but I worry about the physical side of his game. I saw him play in the MN HS state tournament this year and he looked like his was missing that X factor, that ability to carry his team.

Corey Fienhage, Eastview HS, D (36)

He's your prototypical defensive defenseman. He's a catalyst on the blueline, and a solid hitter. You virtually can't catch this kid out of position.

Justin Jokinen, Cloquet HS, RW (54)

This kid has speed to burn. I only saw him once this season, but this kid is some offensive talent. He's got good puckhandling skills and has that intangible ability to finish

Derek Stepan, St. Mary's HS, C (58)

The Kid's got talent, but I'll be honest, its wait and see with this kid. He's got flash and the ability to finish, some physical skill. But that isn't saying much playing average at best teams up north.

David Carle, St Mary's HS, D (60)

I've heard a lot of talk about this kid, great physical ability and makes plays like nobody's business. I've yet to see though; same old story like Stepan, you never know with this kids coming out of smaller schools.

David Toews, St. Mary's HS (79)

St. Mary's really had a good team this year, eh? David has great offensive instinct like his brother Johnathan, he has hockey sense that you can't teach. He tends to back down from the physical battles though.

The Wild, Jake Gardener, and you

According to Mynhldraft.com, The Wild, with the 24th pick, will select Jake Gardener out of Minnetonka High School. Now, I live right by Minnetonka and have seen a bunch of his games. The kid's filthy. He's a great skater who can move the puck real well and has the moves to make any player look silly. To top it off, he's got a cannon for a wrist shot, but I worry about his hitting ability. He isn't as offensive a defenseman as, say, an Aaron Ness from Roseau, but I think he needs to work on the defensive piece of his game.
Face it, the Wild really need a solid blueliner at this point in the game. Carney an Johnsson won't last forever, and who knows how Schultz will respond coming back from that broken leg. Maybe the Wild will go best available in the first round, which might mean Gardener, but I think its time for the Wild to stop playing around and fill some holes, if not at the draft in the free agent market.

Why defense wins chapionships

If there's anything we've seen during these NHL playoffs its that offense sells tickets, but defense really does win championships. I'm not only talking about D- men either; the defensive forwards and goaltenders also. Defense seems to be the achilles heel of all Cup winning teams, from the 1937 Boston Bruins, with the likes of Dit Clapper, Eddie Shore, Jack Crawford and Frank Brimsek, to the 2001 Colerado Avalanche and Alex Tanguay, Ray Bourque, Greg DeVries, and Patrick Roy. This year looks to be no different, with the Detroit Red Wings having the most experienced and most tenacious defensive corps, and being up 2-0 on the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But what about the teams that looked like they had it all put together but still lost out? Take a Look at the Minnesota Wild, who were riddled with injuries along the blueline. The Wild played a total of six playoff games, and played a total of nine defenseman. They had a total of 13 man- games lost due to injuries, which hurt the play of goalie Nick Backstrom, who saw a total of 170 shots and had a 2.83 GAA, averaging to him facing about 28 shots per game, whereas he had a 2.31 GAA in the regular season.
Let's take a look at the Philadelphia Flyers now, who got pounded with injuries in the Eastern Conference Finals. Kimmo Timmonen was a catalyst for the Flyers on the blueline, until he got diagnosed with a blood clot prior to the Finals. He only played one game, game five, and at nowhere near 100%, although he did play 44 minutes. Brandon Coburn was also injured, playing only 2 games in the Finals. Timmonen and Coburn made up the first defensive pairing for the Flyers, and with them being out, it opened up the door for inexperience. Kukkonen also played just two games in the Finals, which meant AHL'er Ryan Parent had to step in and play, forcing more minutes on Hacher and Smith, which is never a good thing and will catch up to a team eventually, and it did.
Finally, lets look at the West Champion, the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings have the best defensive corps in the league, which is why they'll beat the Penguins. The Wings have everything you look for in a team defense: leadership, skating ability, offensive skill, and toughness. Lindstrom is still a very good defenseman with a great shot and unbelievable hockey sense. His partner, Lebda, is also a solid physical defenseman. Chelios is a still a serviceable defenseman who provides leadership and demands accountability and is always in position. Lija is a solid physical blueliner who came through the Wings system; their ability to develop players overseas is unmatched. Let's not forget about Kronvall, who bangs the bodies like no one else in the NHL, and is really coming into his own. The list of great defenseman in Detroit goes on and on, no wonder they keep winning.

FSN North TV demos

I know all television stations are trying to do is kill time, but do they have to do it in such a painful way? The FSN guys are always telling you you how to do something or reenacting something and its so boring to watch most of the time. I think tonight its Roy Smalley and Ron Coomer showing you how to argue with an umpire. Ho hum. During the Wild and Gophers hockey seasons its even worse though, with Darby Hendrickson and everybody's favorite Kevin Gorg telling you how to do things. Now, Darby knows how to do things, and Gorg likes to think he does. Gorg coached hockey at St. Thomas for like five minutes, but still. The only reason I watch those things is for when Gorg and Darby give a clinic on bodychecking. Seriously FSN, is this your idea of entertainment?

Anyone paying attention to the Twins lately? they're on a tear. Who would have guessed the Morneau's and the Mauer's of the world aren't leading the team? It's Howie Clark of all people. A 17 year veteran who has only 900- some at bats. Lets not get overblown here, but when pitchers get hits that win you games, you've got a good thing going. We looked pretty impressive winning 11-4 last night, but we're still around .500. Imagine if we could get Morneau and Mauer hitting?

It kind of defeats the point that I'm talking about the orange and the black on a site called Bleed Green and Red, but deal with it. It's too bad the Flyers couldn't get it done, but to be honest, they didn't deserve it. They played terrible all series against the Penguins, and we only played up to potential one game-- no, one period, the 1st period of game 4. Other than that, we sucked. Biron was off his game and outside of Umberger and Briere, we got no offensive production. Yeah, we got hit hard with injuries to our defensive corps, but I'll give credit where credit is due: Crosby and Malkin were the real deal.

I've had my dumb moments in my life, but this might top them all. I made what could be construed as a drunk call, except I was stone- cold sober. Yesterday, I was watching the Red Wings game with my boy at his graduation party, and with 10 minutes left, I called my brother to ask him to pick me up since he had the car. Anyways, the Red Wings got a 2-1 rush right then or something, and I looked up at the TV while I was dialing him. Or I thought I called him. It turned out it was this random friend that I hadn't called in like a year. I was like "hey bro, wanna give me a ride in like 5 minutes?" thinking I was talking to my brother, but it turns out I wasn't. So there I was, 5 minutes later without a ride. It took me a while to realize the error of my ways and to call the guy back and apologize. So yeah, needles to say I was pretty embarrassed.
